Kyle Alexandre Struan

Kyle Alexandre Struan is the author of Baler and Other Stories and the creator of The Broken Flag Saga — an expansive literary project spanning fourteen series and five hundred years of human conflict.

His debut work, a companion collection set against the backdrop of a fictional Second Spanish Civil War, examines the complete moral lifecycle of societal fracture: from idealistic heroism to devastating atrocity and fragile reconciliation. Stark and deeply philosophical, it is a work that does not flinch.

Educated in Spain and England, and having lived in Brazil, Bolivia, Hong Kong, and Malaysia along the way, he writes with headphones on — classic hard rock and deep house on rotation — and with little patience for people who look after only themselves at everyone else's expense. He writes from a two-century-old stone house in the mountains of Galicia, Spain — a place of ferns, rains, mists and long silences that finds its way into everything he puts on the page.

The Broken Flag Saga is not a single story. It is a project with a singular obsession: what does conflict do to the people inside it? Not the generals, not the politicians — the ordinary men and women who wake up one morning inside a history that will not let them go.

“When not writing, he divides his time between driving his wife mad, getting annoyed at everything and nothing, and trying to finish rebuilding that same house.”

Or rather, everyone was watching, and no one was doing anything about it. In the early years of Spain’s Second Civil War, the nation has fractured along fault lines no one predicted.
